I've removed these cats, but now I'm not so sure. My concern is that they are not defining. It seems that the source for it are the claims of one person, posthumously, and Houston herself never publicly defined herself thus. But the most important thing is; do reliable sources commonly refer to her this way? I'm not sure they do. Escape Orbit(Talk)22:05, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The claim in the lead "one of the most awarded entertainers" is effectively meaningless puffery and unsourced. How has this been measured? Which awards are being counted? Who determined this? How? One of how many? Is she 999th out of 1000, or first out of 10? It conveys nothing factual and should be removed from the lead. It would be far better for it to be replaced with something that highlights the actual awards she has actually been awarded. Escape Orbit(Talk)10:42, 19 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Whitney Houston is literally The Voice. She is the most popular singer with that nickname in pop culture right now. Just like dozens of female pop stars have been called ''Queen of pop'' but it's associated most with Madonna.
"She is the most popular singer with that nickname in pop culture right now" - You can source that claim?
"according to ABC News, Billboard" - Excellent. Could you please add these sources, and we can see how they determined this fact, or whether it is an opinion that should be attributed. The lead paragraph should focus on sourced facts, attributable opinions can come later. --Escape Orbit(Talk)17:33, 19 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
According to several articles by ABC News, Whitney is the most awarded female act, for example:
For the nickname ''The Voice'', according to List of best-selling music artists, Houston is the top-selling artist with the nickname, with 220 million records sold. Another very famous singer who once called The Voice - Frank Sinatra sold 150 million. But he was called ''The Voice'' for a very short period of time (in the begining of his career), the nicknames that most associated with him are The Chairman of the Board or the Ol' Blue Eyes (see Frank Sinatra). Moreover, Biography sites such as Billboard or Britannica for Houston all mention the title ''the Voice'' right in the opening paragraph:
@2402:800:6105:5D0D:610E:9E26:F602:18AC Both sources specify "artist", while the article says "entertainer", and neither give any indication how they determined this. So it's difficult to support it as a fact. The latest of them is also 12 years old.
